ATS-Friendly CVs in Bangladesh: What Actually Matters
Applicant tracking system advice is often presented as a set of rigid rules: use one font, avoid every design element, repeat keywords, and achieve a specific match score.
Applicant tracking system advice is often presented as a set of rigid rules: use one font, avoid every design element, repeat keywords, and achieve a specific match score. In practice, an ATS-friendly CV is simply a document that can be parsed reliably and that helps recruiters find relevant evidence. For candidates in Bangladesh, the challenge is not only software compatibility. The same CV may be reviewed through job portals, email attachments, company career pages, recruitment agencies, and direct referrals. It must work across all of them.
The safest structure is straightforward. Use standard headings such as Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Projects, and Certifications. Keep job titles, company names, dates, and locations clearly separated. Use one consistent date format. Avoid placing essential information inside headers, footers, images, charts, or decorative sidebars. A recruiter should be able to copy the text into a plain document without losing the basic meaning.
File type also matters. PDF is widely used because it preserves layout, but some application systems specifically request DOCX. Follow the employer's instruction first. When no instruction is given, a clean text-based PDF is usually practical. Before uploading, select and copy a paragraph from the PDF. If the text becomes scrambled, missing, or out of order, the file may not parse well.
Keywords matter, but context matters more. If the vacancy asks for payroll, employee relations, Excel, or recruitment, those terms should appear where they truthfully describe your work. Place them in the summary, skills, or experience bullets based on relevance. Do not create a hidden keyword section, use white text, or repeat the same term unnaturally. These tactics reduce credibility and can create problems during interview validation.
Local hiring practices also require human readability. In many Bangladeshi organisations, CVs are screened quickly by HR, line managers, founders, or department heads. A two-column graphic template may still look attractive to a person, but it can slow scanning when the reviewer needs to compare many candidates. Simple does not mean boring. Strong spacing, consistent typography, concise bullets, and clear hierarchy can look professional without increasing parsing risk.
Contact information should be practical. Include a working phone number, professional email address, city or general location, and LinkedIn profile if it is current. A full residential address, national ID number, parents' names, religion, marital status, photograph, or salary history should not be added automatically. Some employers may request particular information later, but including sensitive or irrelevant details by default increases clutter and privacy exposure.
Length should reflect career stage. A fresh graduate can often communicate the relevant story in one page, while an experienced professional may need two pages. The better question is not whether the CV is exactly one or two pages. It is whether every line supports the target role. Old school details, repetitive training lists, generic soft skills, and unrelated responsibilities can usually be reduced.
An ATS score should be treated as a diagnostic, not a verdict. Different systems parse, search, filter, and rank in different ways, and recruiters make the final decisions. A strong process checks four areas: text extraction, requirement coverage, evidence quality, and human scanability.
Before applying, save a plain-text copy, verify that dates and headings remain understandable, compare the CV with the job description, and ask whether a recruiter can see the match within
seconds. ResumeRefinery is designed to support that review by showing ATS friendliness alongside match score, missing keywords, unnecessary information, and overall CV strength.
Candidates in Bangladesh should also account for how applications are actually collected. A CV may be uploaded to a portal, emailed directly, submitted through a company form, or forwarded internally as a PDF. Each route creates different risks, but a clean, selectable-text document performs reliably across all of them. Save the final file as a PDF unless the employer requests another format, use a professional filename, and confirm that text can be copied from the document. Check the file on both desktop and mobile because many recruiters first open attachments on a phone. Keep contact information visible, avoid putting critical details only in headers or graphics, and do not lock the PDF with a password. ATS friendliness is less about gaming software and more about removing preventable friction from the screening process.
